Get to know the England Men's U19 team

The England Men’s U19 team start their ICC Men’s U19 World Cup journey on Saturday. Find out a bit more about the 15-strong group below.

England Men’s U19s coach Mike Yardy introduces the squad ahead of the 2024 ICC Under-19 Cricket World Cup in South Africa…

Ben McKinney (captain)

Age: 19

County: Durham

Role: LHB/WK

Ben’s grown as a leader massively in the last year. He has a real calmness as a captain and makes good decisions under pressure. As a player, his height and ability to hit boundaries from good balls are big assets. He’s also found his own style, Ben’s is measured and he has a good cricket brain as well.

Luc Benkenstein (vice-captain)

Age: 19

County: Essex

Role: RHB/LB

His personality is very positive and he’s very aggressive in how he plays. He has a really high skillset: he’s a middle order batter who also bowls leg spin and is an outstanding fielder. He’s got some really good attributes and he always wants to take the game on.

Farhan Ahmed

Age: 15

County: Nottinghamshire

Role: RHB/OB

Whether Farhan was 15, 18, or 19, he’s here because he’s one of the best spinners in the country at U19 level. His cricket knowledge is well beyond a typical 15-year-old. He carries himself with a high level of maturity, he really understands the game, and then on top of all that he’s got a very high skill level.

Tazeem Ali

Age: 17

County: Warwickshire

Role: RHB/OB

Tazeem bowls relatively quick leg spin and he’s got a real passion for the game. When people are coming at him, he’s a real asset because of the pace he bowls and his accuracy. He’s able to deliver that skill under pressure and that’s a great attribute to have.

Charlie Allison

Age: 18

County: Essex

Role: RHB

Charlie’s a really good guy in the group. He did well for Essex in the Metro Bank One Day Cup last year and he’s a very exciting player to watch, while also being very calm as a person. He plays with a lot of personality and wants to take every game on.

Charlie Barnard

Age: 19

County: Lancashire

Role: RHB/SLA

Charlie Barnard is a very calm and consistent left arm spin bowler. He's very accurate and last season he took vital wickets in a win against Australia. He delivers when he needs to and has a good sense of humour.

Jack Carney

Age: 18

County: Lancashire

Role: RHB/WK

Jack’s an instrumental person in the group. He’s a really good team man, he’s very consistent and he’s performed very well. He turns up for training every day wanting to improve. He’s had quite a quick rise: this time last year, this World Cup wasn’t on his radar. But he’s shown mental strength and skill to get where is now.

Jaydn Denly

Age: 18

County: Kent

Role: LHB/SLA

Jaydn performed really well against Australia last year with really aggressive opening batting. Against India and Bangladesh, he also bowled with the best economy, took vital wickets and in all different situations. He’s a calm guy, but he’s still got that natural aggression with the bat.

Eddie Jack

Age: 18

County: Hampshire

Role: LHB/RMF

Eddie has got great attributes in terms of both his physicality and his height. He can bowl bouncers at good pace. He can also strike a clean ball. He’s a deep thinker about the game. He really cares and he’s very meticulous in his preparation.

Dominic Kelly

Age: 18

County: Hampshire

Role: LHB/RM

Dominic’s a very good competitor. He’s the kind of guy you throw the ball to knowing that he can make things happen. He really gets into the contest. When he’s got the ball in hand, you can see the real competitive edge coming out. Batting wise, he has played some important innings in he middle order in challenging situations.

Sebastian Morgan

Age: 16

County: Middlesex

Role: RHB/RM

Sebastian came in really late at the end of the summer, but you can see he’s got a really high skill set. He’s still only 16, but he fits into the group and he’s shown with his talent that he should be here. He performed really well in India and he’s an exciting all-rounder. Yes, he’s young – but he’s here on merit.

Haydon Mustard

Age: 17

County: Durham

Role: RHB/WK

Haydon’s a player who always wants to take the game on. He’s positive and aggressive with the bat. He’s someone who’s got real potential. He has excellent energy behind the wicket and is good both standing up or back from the stumps.

Hamza Shaikh

Age: 17

County: Warwickshire

Role: RHB/LB

Hamza’s a classy middle order player. He’s technically excellent and he’s performed really well for the U19s. He’s an integral part of the group in the way he carries himself, and he’s got a real calmness and quality when he’s batting. He is also a very good outfielder.

Noah Thain

Age: 19

County: Essex

Role: RHB/RM

Similar to Jack Carney, he’s a great character who makes sure everyone’s all right in the group. He’s a very positive all-rounder. He bats at number three, but he’s also very valuable in bowling overs in all phases of the game. He’s got a light-hearted mentality, so when it’s more tense he can bring out the humour and release the pressure.

Theo Wylie

Age: 18

County: Warwickshire

Role: RHB/SLA

Theo’s another who’s come through late, but he’s an excellent skills particularly in terms of playing spin. He’s played some really outstanding innings and he’s got a very creative style of playing. He’s able to do things that make you stand up and take notice. He has developed his spin bowling and has bowled some very good spells for the U19s.
