Gabriella Rolls - EDI Project Officer, Kent Cricket Foundation

Cricket has always been a huge feature in my life.

My grandad was an umpire and player for our local club Sidcup, my brother was a player in their colts team, and my dad still plays for their mighty 4th XI to this day.

I thought I might escape the world of cricket being a wheelchair user, but there was always a cricket match on TV and I have never missed a club quiz! So, when the opportunity came to pursue a career in cricket, it was a no brainer.

I have now worked for a year as Kent Cricket Foundation鈥檚 EDI Officer, ensuring that everyone, regardless of their circumstances, has the opportunity to get involved and be part of the cricket community. I absolutely love the variety of the job, and being able to meet and work with so many amazing people, whether that be national organisations like the Lords Taverners or Out4Cricket, or local groups like The Fifth Trust or Music for Wellbeing.

Every day is different and I am immensely proud to see the difference the Foundation and I are making every day. My favourite moments are when I get to see people鈥檚 journeys in cricket just beginning, such as when I helped develop Kent鈥檚 first LGBT+ cricket team, or when I contributed to our first SportAbility Festival where over 80 families with disabled children got to play a range of inclusive sports for the first time.

It鈥檚 these moments that really drive me. As someone who uses a wheelchair, I know firsthand that opportunities, especially in sport, aren鈥檛 always the easiest to find, so I want to work every day to make sure that anyone who wants to, whoever they are, can access sport.

To anyone out there thinking of getting involved in sport, whether playing or off the field, please, please go for it. The world of sport needs you and your perspective, and you never know where it might take you!
